COT Heatmap — Frequently Asked Questions
What is a COT heatmap?
A COT heatmap is a grid visualization of CFTC Commitments of Traders data where each row is a futures market and each column is a trader category. Cells are color-coded by how extreme the current positioning is — dark green for extreme net long, dark red for extreme net short, pale for middle-of-range. It lets traders scan positioning across every market at once instead of reading one report at a time.
How do I read the heatmap?
Pick a report format (Futures Only, Disaggregated, TFF or Supplemental) and a history window (1Y, 3Y or 5Y). Each cell's color shows where the current net position sits in that window's distribution. A cell at 95% means the current position is more net long than 95% of historical weeks; a cell at 5% means more net short than 95% of weeks. Hover for exact numbers, click to open the full market report.
What does a green cell mean?
A green cell means the trader category is currently net long and sits in the upper percentile of its historical range. Darker green = more extreme. Traders often watch dark-green cells as contrarian reversal setups: historically, crowded long positioning has preceded sharp pullbacks in the underlying market.
When is the heatmap updated?
The heatmap refreshes every Friday at 3:30 PM ET, within minutes of the CFTC releasing the week's new Commitments of Traders report. Positions reflect Tuesday's market close. When a US federal holiday falls on the Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of that week, the release moves to the next business day, usually the following Monday — a Monday holiday such as Labor Day does not delay it.
How is 'extreme positioning' measured?
Extreme positioning is measured using percentile rank of the current net position (Long − Short) against the selected historical window. The 1Y window uses 52 weeks, 3Y uses 156 weeks, 5Y uses 260 weeks. A percentile of 95% means only 5% of weeks in that window showed a more net long position; a percentile of 5% means only 5% of weeks were more net short. This normalizes comparison across markets of different sizes.
Why use the heatmap instead of the Simplified report?
The Simplified report shows you one market's full history in depth — ideal for drilling into a single instrument. The heatmap shows the opposite: every market at once, at a single moment in time. Use the heatmap to spot cross-market patterns (e.g. Managed Money net long across all metals, or Commercials aggressively short across all energies) and to flag which markets deserve a deeper look in the Simplified, Detailed or Latest report pages.
