No. The COT report spreadsheet defaults to the free CFTC public archive — no API key needed. The optional API mode is for buyers who also subscribe to the $9.99/mo COT Data API and want cleaner column names + longer history. Two separate purchases, completely optional.
Microsoft Excel 2016 or newer on Windows; Excel 2019 or Microsoft 365 on Mac. Both require Power Query support, which is built-in on those versions. Excel for the web does NOT work — the web version doesn't run VBA macros or Power Query write-back. The .xlsm file uses Power Query for the data refresh + a small VBA macro for the market-switcher dropdown.
When you open the workbook, Power Query checks the CFTC public archive (no API key, no auth) and pulls the latest weekly report into the data tabs. The fetch runs under 5 seconds on broadband. Change the market via the Config tab dropdown and a VBA Worksheet_Change handler triggers a fresh refresh — also under 5 seconds. The rest of the workbook is yours: pivots, charts, formulas, conditional formatting, custom market lists.
Yes — every tab is yours to edit. Build pivots, charts, formulas, conditional formatting, market watchlists, anything. Just leave `Data_Latest` and `Data_History` as they are: they hold the raw CFTC pull and the lookup logic, and editing them would break the auto-refresh. If you need to extend the data layer, build a new tab that references those two via formula — that's the supported pattern.
