Frequently Asked Questions
What is a prop trading firm?
A proprietary trading firm (prop firm) is a company that gives qualified traders access to a funded trading account in exchange for a share of the profits. Most modern prop firms use an evaluation model: you pay a one-time fee to take a challenge, and once you pass the trading criteria you trade a funded account where you keep 70-90 percent of the profits.
Are prop firm payouts real?
Yes — the payouts are real for the firms we list, and we link to public verification (Trustpilot reviews, payout proofs published by the firm, third-party reviews) on each prop firm page. The prop firm business model only works if traders actually get paid; firms that withhold payouts do not survive.
Which prop firm is best for futures?
Futures-focused prop firms (Apex Trader Funding, TopStepTrader, Earn2Trade, MyFundedFutures) typically use the Tradovate or NinjaTrader platform and CME futures markets. Each has slightly different rules, drawdown limits and scaling. Use the comparison page to see them side-by-side.
Can I lose money with a prop firm?
Your financial loss is limited to the cost of the challenge or the monthly subscription. You are not trading your own deposit — the funded account uses the firm's capital. However, breaking a rule (exceeding a daily loss limit, hitting trailing drawdown) immediately ends the account and you forfeit any unpaid profit.
How much does a prop firm challenge cost?
Typically $50-$600 depending on funded account size. Most evaluations are one-time fees in this range — Apex Trader Funding starts around $137 for a $25k futures account, TopStep starts around $99 for the smallest combine, FTMO challenges run $99-$1080 for funded accounts $10k-$200k. The challenge fee is a one-time cost; once you pass and get funded, there’s no ongoing subscription on most futures-focused firms.
How long does evaluation take?
Anywhere from a few days to a few months depending on the firm’s rules and your trading frequency. Most futures prop firms (Apex, TopStep, MyFundedFutures) have no minimum trading-day requirement, so a careful trader can clear the profit target in 1-2 weeks. Many Forex/CFD prop firms, FTMO among them, set a minimum number of trading days even if you hit the target sooner. Read the specific firm’s rules — daily loss limit and trailing drawdown are usually what eliminates traders, not the profit target itself.
